The decision to move to the UK and more specifically to Edinburgh to begin the MSc Magazine Publishing at Edinburgh Napier University, allowed me to learn a lot and have new and inspiring experiences. One of these has certainly been the placement at Connect Communications.
Between February and March, I spent, along with Isobel, five weeks at Scotland’s largest corporate publishing and creative communications company, which produces hundreds of magazines and manages to handle the great amount of work with passion and dedication every day. During my time at Connect I had the chance to have an insight of the publishing world and a real work experience.
We were immediately involved in the office life. Everyone was incredibly nice and available for anything we could need and, between one cup of tea and another, we also managed a great deal of work. As previously agreed with Daniel Lambie, Head of Development and Client Services, we had to compile a database as part of a wider market research project being carried out by Connect. This part of the project kept me and Isobel very busy and made us some sort of Excel and data collector experts!
A second part of the placement required us to write a feature about a postgraduate Publishing students’ fears and hopes, a topic we know quite well! So, in the role of writers, we followed the process of creating an article: from the writing, to the design, thanks to the Photoshop and InDesign skills of Neil Braidwood, Creative and Publishing Manager.
Our work has been fully rewarded with inspiring and interesting chats with members of the staff from different departments who, among other things, have been so nice as to give us advice for our future.
I feel that the collaboration with Connect has been so valuable for me to improve some of my skills and the cheery atmosphere obviously helped to make it a very positive experience!
I recommend that future students have their placement at Connect Communications, you won’t be disappointed!
