On 7 March, 2014, six World Book Day contest winners and their families were invited to the Glass Room at Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston Campus for a special party and to receive their prizes.

Primary school students from Edinburgh were invited to participate in the contest ‘Aliens in Edinburgh’ that included creating a book cover featuring an alien visiting a popular Edinburgh landmark. Over 3200 students from 36 schools entered the contest.

In the Primary 1 – 3 category, third place was awarded to Bradley Leslie from Murrayburn Primary School for his alien Jimmy. Second place went to Freya Harkess from Fox Covert Primary School and her alien Chukka Wukka. First prize went to Caine Hulbert from St. David’s Primary School and his awesome alien Angus.

In the Primary 4 – 7 category, third place went to Aimee Dark from Gracemount Primary School and her alien Roben. Second place was awarded to Harrison Lee from Echline Primary School for his alien Marvin the Martian. First prize went to Bethany Connor from Roseburn Primary School and her fabulous alien Jellyman.

The party included entertainment by the incredible storytelling duo Macastory, who performed some excellent intergalactic stories and songs about aliens!

Marion Sinclair from the Publishing Scotland presented the awards to the winning students. First place prizes included Hudl tablets and a framed copy of the winning illustrations, while second and third place received a selection of books.

The event was sponsored by Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh Napier University’s Scottish Centre for the Book and organised by Edinburgh Napier MSc Publishing students Rebecca Brown, Hannah Doherty, Keara Donnachie, Kate Patrick, Hannah Taylor, and Laura Will.

Congratulations to all of the winners!
