Being a psychology undergraduate student before whose work experience was in a totally different environment and setting, I was eager to start off my first ever publishing work experience. Editing proofs felt like a bit of a change of pace compared to working within charities and the third sector which I had gained experience in several times before. It was time to put writing reports and making coffee to bed and start something new.
I am now currently carrying out my first ever publishing placement for the Edinburgh Literary Salon’s new anthology. I am part of the editorial team. The team is from Edinburgh Napier University and works alongside the Edinburgh Literary Salon and the marketing team. I could not wait to begin this placement and be able to say that I have contributed to an actual published piece of work. How cool is that? Previously, I had done some editing throughout my tutoring work, however, this was a new kettle of fish. Editing the work of authors for publication was a bit different than proofing a client’s homework task I had given them the week before. The stakes are higher. The pressure is on.
At first, I thought to myself am I really going to be trusted to edit authors’ works that will eventually be published for anyone to read. Surely not? Then I collected myself and realised that I had to have confidence in my work and capabilities. I have been doing editing work in class, it shouldn’t be too different in the real world, right? As I was working my way through the proofs I noticed this wasn’t as scary or difficult as I initially thought and that I in fact did know what to do.
We also work as a team, so I have others to ask questions and go to for support when needed. I am never alone in this, if I am unsure about any aspect I can ask someone. Having a friendly team of approachable individuals makes all the difference. No question is seen as silly and anything can be asked, it is truly a wonderful experience. Additionally, as a team we have discussed potential themes, cover, and order which has been a really enjoyable task. Not only am I editing pieces, but I also am helping with other aspects of the anthology as a whole.
Furthermore, I was also nervous about having to work with and contact authors as to an extent I feel I was holding authors on a pedestal. These people have written a lovely piece which they spent a lot of time on. Why would they trust little student me to edit their work? However, each and every author I have collaborated with has been lovely and it has reminded me that they are normal people too. There is a mutual trust and I have found it rewarding working with them.
I am having a lot of fun so far during my placement and can’t wait for the next steps of this anthology. I look forward to seeing the publication complete and published. This will be a really rewarding moment for all of us and make the initial nerves and hard work all worth it. I am excited to see what my publishing experience has in store for me next. What I have learned most to carry forward is that confidence is key and to not downplay my abilities. I can do this.
