1st Trimester, 2010/11
Each year, we welcome a number of Guest Speakers from the Publishing Industry.
Although we are only in Week 9, this trimester’s students have already heard from Marion Sinclair (Chief Executive, Publishing Scotland and a former lecturer on MSc Publishing), Kathy Crawford (Business Manager of PPA Scotland), Lorraine Fannin (OBE and Publishing Consultant), Dayspring MacLeod and Leila Cruickshank from the SYP (Society of Young Publishers, Scotland branch); Sam Kelly (former literary agent and Lecturer in Creative Writing at Edinburgh Napier University).
Alexander McCall Smith
On 25 March, the Edinburgh based writer, Prof Alexander McCall Smith, the author of over sixty books (including the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series and the 44 Scotland Street series), stopped between his travels around the world to come and give a talk to students on the English and Publishing degrees at Edinburgh Napier University. Dr Bashabi Fraser (lecturer in Creative Writing), who organised the event, has had a stream of messages from students and staff since then, all saying how much they enjoyed the event.
After the mesmerising talk, the students were given free signed copies of McCall Smith’s books which will probably be cherished keepsakes to be shown off as a reminder of what was a truly captivating experience.
